Anglo-Saxon Gardens at the Time of the Norman Conquest

win322__50048.jpg Anglo-Saxons experienced extraordinary adjustments to their day-to-day lives in the latter half of the eleventh century due to the accession of the Normans. The Normans were much better than the Anglo-Saxons at architecture and horticulture when they came into power. But the Normans had to pacify the entire territory before they could concentrate on home life, domestic architecture, and decoration. Monasteries and castles served separate functions, so while monasteries were massive stone structures assembled in only the most productive, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the people focused on understanding offensive and defensive practices. Gardening, a placid occupation, was impracticable in these unproductive fortifications. The purest example of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture existent presently is Berkeley Castle. It is said that the keep was created during William the Conqueror's time. A big terrace recommended for exercising and as a means to stop enemies from mining under the walls runs around the building. A picturesque bowling green, covered in grass and bordered by battlements clipped out of an ancient yew hedge, makes one of the terraces.

The Magnificent Cascade Fountain at the Garden of Chatsworth

Forming a spectacular center of attention to the gardens at the back of Chatsworth House is the Cascade garden fountain. Stretching down the hillside for 200 yards in the direction of the residence is a collection of twenty-four irregularly spaced stone steps. Totally gravity fed, the Cascade too is dependent on a 17th century French layout. This water fountain has been kept the same after being designed for the first Duke of Devonshire in 1696. Positioned at the peak of the fountain is the Cascade House, from which water runs downward. Decorated on the outside of the house with deep-sea creatures in bas-relief, the home is a small building. Water pressure to the Cascade can easily be boosted on certain moments, causing the Cascade House to become a part of the Cascade display, as water runs through conduits on its rooftop and from the mouths of its carved sea creatures, prior to proceeding down the Cascade.

The music of the water cascading may vary as it descends down the Cascades, offering a great and soothing accompaniment to a stroll through the gardens and created by the slight difference of each step. This cascade was chosen in a survey, carried out by Country Life in 2004, as England'sbest water fountain.

The Appeal of Tiered Water Elements

Gardens are common places to showcase a tiered fountain, a style which has historically been very fashionable. The countries in the southern region of Europe tend to have a lot of these types of fountains. Piazzas and building courtyards are very popular places where you will see tiered fountains. Tiered fountains come in a wide range of designs, from elaborately carved styles to relatively basic types.

People love to showcase them in areas having a classic look and feel. The fountain should blend right into the surroundings as if it has been there since the start.

How Fountains can be Ideal for the Environment

Do you want to make your home just a little more stunning? Stop looking! Solar water fountains are the perfect solution - they bring beauty to any home and at the same time add financial value to the property. Solar powered water features can be a wiser investment versus electric ones because they not only improve one's well-being but they offer other interesting monetary perks. While your initial expenditures may be steeper, the long-term savings are worthwhile. You will not have to concern yourself about energy shortages as your fountain will not be powered by electricity.

Running water fountains means that your use of electricity will increase and thus your monthly bill. The short-term advantages may not be noticeable, but keep in mind that the increased value of your home will be later on.

The increased costs resulting from using more electricity is not the only factor, it also harms our eco-system. The only source of energy used by solar powered water features is sunlight making them a “green” alternative. Using solar energy to power our homes as well as a water feature is important because it also safeguards our environment.

Less maintenance is a result of installing this kind of fountain. Since these do not run using an electric motor that could clog up with debris, they need little cleaning. And this means more you time!

Water Features: Pets, Flying Friends and You

Outdoor water features and bird feeders are a natural way to draw in wildlife and pets. Birds need to have water to drink, bathe in, as well a place to groom, or preen. Birds such as robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers are normally enticed to the flowing water of fountains. While bowl-shaped bird baths can be unexciting to many birds, fountains are more enticing because of the moving water they generate. Trickling fountains that splash around are audible from a distance, attracting even more birds.

As dog owners will agree these outdoor fountains are a great water resource for the four-legged creatures. Dogs and cats will be outdoors looking out for refreshing water during hot weather. Because water in fountains is always moving, they do not need much cleaning, whereas the still water of birdbaths collect debris and require more care.

Outdoor Garden Fountains And Their Use In The Minoan Civilization

Archaeological excavations in Minoan Crete in Greece have revealed several types of conduits. These supplied water and extracted it, including water from waste and storms. Stone and clay were the elements of choice for these channels. There were clay pipelines, both round and rectangular as well as pathways made from the same material. The cone-like and U-shaped clay piping which were uncovered have not been spotted in any other society. Clay piping were used to administer water at Knossos Palace, running up to three meters under the floor surfaces. The pipelines also had other uses such as collecting water and channeling it to a primary area for storage.

In order to make this achievable, the conduits had to be tailored to handle: Subterranean Water Transportation: It’s not quite understood why the Minoans required to transfer water without it being spotted. Quality Water Transportation: There’s also data which indicates the pipes being made use of to feed water features separately from the local strategy.
