A Private Pond Fountain for Your Garden

When envisioning a fountain, most people first think of the artfully sculpted ones found adorning beautiful homes, parks, public buildings, etc. However, they can really fit any area, as they can be made in just about any shape, size, and design. You might even find a spot in your own garden area for a beautiful pond fountain.

Two positive things can take place if you put in one of your own.

One is the feeling of calm and loveliness that fountains add. What better way to wind down than to listen to the trickle of water and experience its beauty. You will find your environment benefitting from its elegance, too. Moreover, your beautiful fountain will motivate your guests to gather around and take photos, making your get-togethers even more lively.

The other reason to put in this type of water element is to keep the water in your pond fresher for your fish. Fish need water that is flowing and aerated, and pond fountains provide both. The better-oxygenated and constantly flowing water will ensure your fish are around for a long time. You will see an improvement in your flowers as well.

Santa Maria in Cosmedin: A Roman Fountain Worth Visiting

Archaeologists and restorers alike have stumbled upon a treasure trove of pagan and Christian relics on the site of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The celebrated marble sculpture called the Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth) can be seen in the portico of the basilica nearby. The location of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was not in a well-known area and was, therefore, not frequently visited. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a drab and deserted part of the city. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to erect a fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an attempt to make the area more popular. Work on the church's infrastructure commenced on on August 11, 1717. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was blessed and medals bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also tossed in.

The Garden of Chatsworth and its Grandiose Cascading Water Fountain

Providing a spectacular centerpiece to the gardens at the back of Chatsworth House is the Cascade garden fountain. Stretching down the hillside for 200 yards towards the house is a collection of 24 irregularly spaced stone steps. Completely gravity fed, the Cascade too is founded on a 17th century French layout. This water fountain has been kept unmodified after being Created for the first Duke of Devonshire in 1696. The Cascade House overlooks the fountain, where water gently moves downward. Marine creatures in bas-relief beautify the outside of the dwelling which is a small building. Water pressure to the Cascade can easily be boosted on certain moments, causing the Cascade House to become part of the Cascade spectacle, as water runs through conduits on its rooftop and from the mouths of its carved ocean creatures, prior to proceeding along the Cascade. The shape of every step was made slightly different and means that the music of the water cascading fluctuates as it descends the Cascades, offering a wonderful and calming complement to a walk through the gardens. In 2004, Chatsworth's Cascade was voted the best water fountain in England.

The Demand for Water Features in Japanese Landscapes

A water element is an important part of any Japanese garden. You will often notice Japanese water fountains in the doorway of a temple or home due to the fact that they are regarded as symbolic of physical and spiritual cleansing. The design of Japanese fountains tends to be very simple because they are meant to draw attention to the water itself.

Moreover, water fountains with built-in bamboo spouts are very common. The basin, which tends to be made of stones, receives the water as it flows down from the bamboo spout. In addition, it is essential to the overall look that it appear as if it has been outside for a long time. So that the fountain seems at one with nature, people normally adorn it with natural stones, pretty flowers, and plants. To the owner of the fountain, it clearly is more than just nice decor.

If you want to get a bit more imaginative, try a stone fountain embellished with live bamboo and other natural elements placed on a bed of gravel. Before long moss begins to grow over the stones and cover them, and as that happens the area begins to look more and more like a natural part of the landscape.

Wherever there is plenty of open space, you have the option to build a more extensive water feature. Lots of people add a koi pond or a tiny stream as a final touch.

Water, nevertheless, does not have to be used in a Japanese fountain. Lots of people decide to represent water with sand, gravel, or rocks rather than putting in real water. Natural rocks that are smooth and laid out tightly together can be used to give the illusion of flowing water.
