Gardens of Chatworth and its Revelation Garden Fountain

Angela Conner, the famous British sculptor, fashioned “Revelation,” the latest addition to the ornamental exterior fountains of Chatsworth. In celebration of the Queen’s 80th birthday celebration, she was commissioned by the late 11th Duke of Devonshire to create a limited edition bust of Queen Elizabeth designed of brass and steel in 2004. 50235sl__62757.jpg In 1999 Revelation was installed in Jack Pond, one of Chatsworth’s earliest ponds. It takes the configuration of four large petals designed from metal which open and close with the water circulation, alternately concealing and exposing a gold colored globe at the sculpture’s heart. The sculpture’s dimensions are five meters high by five meters wide and includes a steel globe coated with gold dust. The petals move depending on the circulation of water, making this installation an intriguing addition to the Gardens of Chatsworth.

The Legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, were actually gardens planned and planted on roof terraces. These waterproof rooftop gardens were planned to be created all-around a mammoth stone underpinning that would surround the massive storage rooms below. The terrace soil was solid enough to efficiently grow trees and water from deep wells nourished the plants through hydraulic devices. Thyme, poppy, anise, and rosemary were preferred plants.

The Dazzling Cascade Water Feature at the Garden of Chatsworth

Providing a fabulous focal point to the gardens at the back of Chatsworth House is the Cascade garden fountain. For 200 yards in direction of the residence is a series of twenty-four irregularly positioned stone steps extending all the way down the hillside. Based on a 17th century French design, the Cascade is also completely gravity fed. Created for the earliest Duke of Devonshire in 1696, this water fountain has remained unaltered ever since. At the peak of the fountain, from which water flows downward, rests the Cascade House. Embellished on the exterior with underwater creatures in bas-relief, the house is a smaller construction. Leading to the Cascade House to become part of the Cascade pageant, on important occasions water pressure to the Cascade can be increased, as liquid runs through ducts on its rooftop and from the jaws of its carved sea creatures, before continuing down the Cascade. The shape of every step was made slightly different and means that the sound of the water falling varies as it descends the Cascades, offering a remarkable and soothing accompaniment to a walk through the gardens. In 2004, Chatsworth's Cascade was named the best water fountain in England.

The Demand for Water Features in Japanese Gardens

A water feature is an important part of any Japanese garden. They tend to be placed right at the entrance of Japanese temples and homes because they are considered representative of spiritual and physical cleansing. The design of Japanese fountains tends to be very basic because they are meant to call attention to the water itself.

Bamboo is a widely accepted material to use for spouts and therefore often incorporated into water fountains. The bamboo spout is positioned over the basin, typically crafted of natural stones, and water trickles out. Even when new, it should be crafted to look as if it has been out in the open for a long time. It is vital that the overall look of the fountain goes with the natural setting, so people typically place plants, rocks, and flowers around it. Clearly this fountain is much more than just a pretty add-on.

An alternative is to get a stone fountain, set it on a bed of rock, and place live bamboo and pretty stones around it. Over the years it begins to really blend into the surrounding nature as moss grows over the stone.

Wherever there is plenty of open space, you have the option to build a more extensive water feature. Charming add-ons include a babbling stream or tiny pool with koi in it.

However, water does not need to be an addition in a Japanese water fountain.

Many people decide to represent water with sand, gravel, or rocks rather than putting in actual water. You can also collect flat stones and put them close enough together that they look like water in motion.
