The First Outdoor Public Fountains

Towns and communities depended on working water fountains to funnel water for preparing food, washing, and cleaning up from nearby sources like ponds, streams, or creeks. In the years before electrical power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity alone, often using an aqueduct or water supply located far away in the surrounding mountains. Inspiring and impressive, big water fountains have been constructed as memorials in most civilizations. The common fountains of today bear little resemblance to the first water fountains. win454__91599.jpg A stone basin, crafted from rock, was the first fountain, utilized for containing water for drinking and ceremonial functions. 2000 BC is when the earliest identified stone fountain basins were actually used. Early fountains used in ancient civilizations depended on gravity to control the circulation of water through the fountain. These original fountains were designed to be functional, usually situated along reservoirs, creeks and waterways to supply drinking water. The people of Rome began building ornate fountains in 6 B.C., most of which were bronze or stone masks of animals and mythological heroes. A well-designed system of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public water fountains supplied with fresh water.

The Major Characteristics of Ancient Greek Statuary

Up right up until the Archaic Greeks created the first freestanding sculpture, a phenomenal success, carvings had mostly been done in walls and pillars as reliefs. Most of the freestanding statues were of young, winsome male or female (kore) Greeks and are known as kouros figures. Considered by Greeks to embody splendour, the kouroi were shaped into inflexible, forward facing poses with one foot outstretched, and the male statues were always nude, well-developed, and fit. In 650 BC, life-size forms of the kouroi began to be seen. The Archaic period was tumultuous for the Greeks as they evolved into more sophisticated forms of government and art, and gained more information about the peoples and societies outside of Greece. But in spite of the conflicts, the Greek civilization continued to progress, unabated.

It is a little known fact that the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, were basically terraced roofs full of flora. They were water-proof and designed to be developed over a large, curved stone foundation that kept massive storage rooms below. The terraces successfully grew trees considering the soil was deep and water from cavernous wells was provided to the plants through a hydraulic technique. Thyme, poppy, anise, and rosemary were popular plants.

When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was created in 1719, it was off the beaten track and generally unknown as a result. Since the nearby area was gloomy and mostly abandoned, people were not particularly interested in visiting it. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to build a water fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an effort to make the area more popular. August 11, 1717 saw the start of the task to lay down the foundation of the church. The first stone to be placed in the foundation was blessed and medals bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were also thrown in.
