A Real Roman Wonder: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Both Christian and pagan articles have been found in large quantities by archaeologists and restorers scouring the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The nearby basilica is largely renowned for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its portico. ft-291_art__58239.jpg When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin water fountain was constructed in 1719, it was off the beaten track and generally unknown as a result. For the most part, visitors stayed away from the area because it was a bleak and deserted part of the city. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was commissioned by Pope Clement XI to build a water fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an effort to make the area more popular. Work on the church's infrastructure started on on August 11, 1717. The consecration of the first stone to be placed in the foundation was followed by medals being thrown in showing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water.

Architectural Sculpture in Ancient Greece

Traditionally, the vast majority of sculptors were paid by the temples to embellish the elaborate pillars and archways with renderings of the gods, but as the period came to a close it became more accepted for sculptors to portray ordinary people as well simply because many Greeks had begun to think of their religion as superstitious rather than sacred. Wealthy individuals would occasionally commission a rendering of their ancestors for their big family tombs; portraiture also became common and would be appropriated by the Romans upon their acquisition of Greek society. The use of sculpture and other art forms varied over the many years of The Greek Classical period, a duration of artistic progress when the arts had more than one objective. Greek sculpture is probably fascinating to us at present as it was an avant-garde experiment in the ancient world, so it doesn't matter whether or not its original function was religious zeal or artistic pleasure.

Enticing Water Features for Felines

Does your cat like to leap onto the counter when he hears the tap? Does he reach into the toilet or check the water in his bowl before putting his face in it? Although these behaviors might seem odd, in fact they are common because cats shy away from water that is not moving. They are not motivated to drink water much at all.

Untamed cats get enough moisture from the meat they ingest. This tendency removed any impulse felines had to find more water to drink. Pet cats, though, depend on you for their water, as they do not get the essential hydration from their foods. Make water easily accessible to your cat by putting in a cat fountain.

If you get one, you can rest easy knowing your cat has easy access to water.

There are many different styles of fountains so you can get one that your cat really likes. There are fountains that always have constant flowing fresh water while others have a basin which refills as your cat drinks from it.

Pondless Fountains: Some of the Plusses of Having one in your Garden

Disappearing fountains sometimes go by the name “pondless” fountains. The water comes from an underground source, hence the name. Disappearing fountains should be positioned near any place people hang out frequently, as they add so much to the surrounding area. It is not hard to find the kind that is right for you, as there are so many to pick from such as millstones, ceramic urns, waterfalls, and also those with granite columns.

Disappearing fountains also have many benefits. There is no big pool of water that could pose a threat to anyone since the water comes from beneath the ground.

That said, you will not have to worry about the safety of your children. Moreover, no water can evaporate since it is not subjected to the open air. This means you will use less water than if you had another kind of fountain. This type of fountain is perfect if you do not have a lot of time to clean it often since neither debris nor algae can reach it underground. Last but not least, because of its small size it can fit almost any place you like.
