Water Garden Fountains Recorded by History

wwlhcg-ss__94418.jpg The water from rivers and other sources was initially delivered to the occupants of nearby towns and cities through water fountains, whose design was largely practical, not artistic. A supply of water higher in elevation than the fountain was necessary to pressurize the flow and send water spraying from the fountain's spout, a technology without equal until the later part of the nineteenth century. Typically used as memorials and commemorative structures, water fountains have inspired travelers from all over the globe throughout the centuries. The contemporary fountains of today bear little similarity to the very first water fountains. The 1st known water fountain was a natural stone basin created that was used as a receptacle for drinking water and ceremonial purposes. The first stone basins are presumed to be from around 2000 B.C.. The first fountains put to use in ancient civilizations depended on gravity to manipulate the movement of water through the fountain. Drinking water was provided by public fountains, long before fountains became elaborate public statues, as attractive as they are functional. Fountains with ornate decoration started to appear in Rome in approx. 6 BC, normally gods and wildlife, made with stone or copper-base alloy. A well-designed collection of reservoirs and aqueducts kept Rome's public fountains supplied with fresh water.

Factors to Know When Installing a Garden Water Feature

A lot of people forget the need for an electrical socket or water source close by when considering where to put their garden fountain. The thrill of owning one occasionally causes people to overlook the technical aspects when setting it up for the first time. If you require an extension cord to reach a 120v wall socket, feel free to use one, as conventional power cords are only 12 feet long. Install your fountain in a place close to a water source as you will need to fill it. It is tough to move water from one spot to another. The easiest way to fill the fountain is with a nearby hose. The ideal setup is with a water fountain autofill, but this has to be hooked up to an external water line and requires a skilled person to install it.

Common Fountains Found in Japanese Gardens

No Japanese garden is whole without a water element. Since Japanese water fountains are viewed as symbolic of physical and spiritual cleansing, they are often positioned at the entrance of buildings or shrines. The design of Japanese fountains tends to be very simple because they are meant to draw attention to the water itself.

Bamboo is a widely accepted material to use for spouts and therefore often incorporated into water fountains. Under the bamboo spout is generally a stone basin which receives the water as it trickles down from the spout. It must have a worn-down, weathered appearance as well. Natural elements such as plants and rocks are often put in place around a fountain so that it seems more in line with nature. To the owner of the fountain, it obviously is more than just nice decor.

An alternative is to find a stone fountain, set it on a bed of rock, and place live bamboo and pretty stones around it. The aim is that over time it will start to look more and more like a natural part of the landscape, as moss slowly grows over the stones.

If you are lucky enough to have a big section of open land you can create a water feature that is much more elaborate.

Charming add-ons include a babbling stream or tiny pool with koi in it.

However, water does not need to be an addition in a Japanese water fountain. It is okay to use representations of water in lieu of real water, such as sand, rocks, or natural stones. You can also gather flat stones and place them close enough together that they look like water in motion.

A True Roman Marvel: The Santa Maria Fountain in Cosmedin

Both Christian and pagan relics have been found in by the load by archaeologists and restorers searching the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin in Rome. The Bocca della Verità (Mouth of Truth} is a famed marble sculpture situated in the portico of the nearby basilica. The location of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain (1719) was not in a well-known neighborhood and was, therefore, not frequently visited. The part of town where it was situated was depressing and bleak which generally kept people away. In order to refurbish the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Pope Clement XI commissioned an Italian architect by the name of Carlo Bizzaccheri to put up a fountain for the area. The job of laying down the church’s foundation began on August 17, 1717. After blessing of the first stone, medals with the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown into the foundation.
