Garden fountains come in a large range of options from which to choose. First and foremost, you must determine which one to purchase and the best place to hang it.

Pond Water Features: The Gem in Your Own Yard

Most people think of the spectacular masterpieces that decorate the front of public buildings when they think of fountains. However, they can really fit any environment, as they can be made in just about any shape, size, and design. Your very own lawn or yard can be a ideal spot for a pond fountain.

Two key benefits can result from setting up one of your own. To start off, everyone knows that fountains add elegance and contribute to a comforting ambiance. What better way to wind down than to listen to the trickle of water and enjoy its charm. You will see your surroundings benefitting from its elegance, too.

What’s more, your lovely fountain will fascinate your guests and you will find your parties more fun.

The second reason for a water element is to ensure a healthy environment for the fish in your pond. Since it keeps the water pumping continuously, it helps to increase the oxygen level in the pond to the advantage of your fish. The nonstop movement of the water and the enhanced oxygen levels will make sure your fish stay healthy. Your plant life will also flourish.

Mounting a Wall Water Element in Your Residence

Just about any living space will benefit from the inclusion of a wall fountain. The relaxing sound of the waterfall will relax and comfort. While any area will benefit from a wall fountain, they are most often hung in foyers. The best way to mount one depends on the style, but the standard process is the same. Bear in mind that different components will need to be put together during assembly. The foundation and the upper portion will need to be put together as well as the pump and the tubing. Remember to review the instructions before getting started in order to avert mistakes. It is normally a straight-forward process. Note, however, that the directions for your particular model can vary a bit. Have a colleague hold the wall fountain in the desired spot, then mark the wall accordingly. A level is the ideal to ensure it is mounted correctly. Draw your markings at both the top and the bottom. Wall features can be hung in more than just one way. There are holes on the back which can be placed onto the screws you place on the wall. On the other hand, brackets can be secured to the wall.

The second option is better suited, especially for bigger wall fountains. Mark the point on the wall where the brackets need to be attached. Use a drill to make the pilot holes on the wall for the drywall anchors. Place the anchors in the wall with a hammer. Use a cordless drill or a screwdriver to install the brackets, making sure they are straight. At this point, pick up your unit and fit it on the mounting brackets. Check to be sure it is both secure and straight. When you are confident the unit is secure, fill with water. Use sufficient water so that the pump is completely covered. The water will begin to move as soon as you plug in your fountain. Carefully pour in just enough water to reach one inch below the top edge of the basin. The basin will overflow when the pump is shut off if it’s too full, so be certain not to fill it completely. Whenever the water is not being pumped, it all settles at the bottom causing the water level to rise. The water will overflow and cause property damage if your wall fountain is overly full.

Keeping Your Wall fountain Tidy

Appropriate care and regular cleaning are important to the longevity of water fountains. A common issue with fountains is that they tend to collect dirt and debris, so it is essential that you keep it free from this. Another factor is that water that is exposed to sunlight is susceptible to growing algae. Either sea salt, hydrogen peroxide, or vinegar can be blended into the water to eliminate this problem.

Another option is to stir bleach into the water, but this action can harm wild animals and so should really be avoided.

Experts suggest that the typical garden fountain undergoes a thorough cleaning every three-four months. The first task is to get rid of all the water. When you have done this, scour inside the water reservoir with a mild detergent. If there are any little grooves, use a toothbrush to reach every spot. Any soap residue remaining on your fountain can harm it, so be sure it is all rinsed off.

Make sure you get rid of any calcium or plankton by taking the pump apart and washing the inside carefully. You might want to let it soak in vinegar for a few hours to make it much less difficult to clean. Neither rain water nor mineral water contain components that will build up inside the pump, so use either over tap water if possible.

Lastly, make sure your fountain is always full by checking it every day - this will keep it in tip-top condition. If the water level drops below the pump’s intake level, it can hurt the pump and cause it to burn out - something you don't want to happen!

A Fabulous Example of Roman Artistry: The Santa Maria in Cosmedin Fountain

Archaeologists and restorers on the lookout for pagan and Christian artifacts in Rome have come across a treasure trove of them in the area of the Santa Maria in Cosmedin.

The nearby basilica is largely famous for the marble sculpture known as the Bocca della Verità, (Mouth of Truth) located in its portico. When the Santa Maria in Cosmedin fountain was constructed in 1719, it was off the beaten track and mostly unknown as a result. Due to the fact that the nearby area was depressing and mostly abandoned, visitors were not particularly interested in visiting it. It was then that the Italian architect Carlo Bizzaccheri was instructed by Pope Clement XI to erect a fountain in the square outside the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin in an attempt to make the area more popular. Work on the church's infrastructure started on on August 11, 1717. Medallions bearing the images of the Blessed Virgin, for whom the church is named, and of St. John the Baptist, the patron saint of water, were thrown in the foundation following the consecration of the first stone.
