The Impact of the Norman Invasion on Anglo-Saxon Landscaping

The advent of the Normans in the later half of the 11th century significantly transformed The Anglo-Saxon ways of living. Architecture and gardening were attributes that the Normans excelled in, trumping that of the Anglo-Saxons at the time of the occupation. But yet there was no time for home life, domesticated architecture, and adornment until the Normans had overcome the whole region. Monasteries and castles served separate purposes, so while monasteries were large stone structures assembled in only the most fruitful, wide dales, castles were set upon blustery knolls where the residents focused on understanding offensive and defensive practices. Peaceful pastimes such as gardening were out of place in these desolate citadels. Berkeley Castle, perhaps the most uncorrupted model of the early Anglo-Norman style of architecture, still exists now.

The keep is said to date from the time of William the Conqueror. A large terrace meant for strolling and as a way to stop attackers from mining below the walls runs around the building. One of these terraces, a charming bowling green, is covered grass and flanked by an aged yew hedge cut into the figure of crude battlements.

Setting Up and Maintaining Large Garden Fountains

A very important first step is to consider the proportions of the outdoor wall fountain with regards to the space you have available for it. It is essential that the wall where you are going to put it is strong enough to support its load. So spaces or walls which are smaller in size will most likely require something light. An electrical socket close to the fountain is required to power the fountain. Most outdoor wall fountains come with simple, step-by-step instructions according to the type of fountain.

Most outside wall fountains are available in "for-dummies" style kits that will give you all you need to properly install it. The kit will contain a submersible pump, the hoses and basin (or reservoir). If the size is average, the basin can be hidden away amongst your garden plants. Other than the regular cleaning, little maintenance is required once your outdoor wall fountain is installed.

Replace and clean the water on a regular schedule. Remember to get rid of debris like leaves, twigs or dirt as swiftly as possible. Additonally, outdoor fountains should always be shielded from freezing temperatures during the winter months.

Bring your pump inside when the weather turns very cold and freezes the water so as to eliminate any possible harm, like as cracking. All in all, an outdoor wall fountain can last for any number of years with proper upkeep and care.

Water Features: Cherished Pets, Flying Friends and You

Anyone who has bird feeders knows that outdoor water fountains bring in wildlife. Birds need to have water to drink, bathe in, as well a place to groom, or preen. There are some birds, like robins, thrushes, orioles, or warblers, which are not attracted to bird feeders, but are drawn to fountains because of the moving water. Birds are usually drawn to outdoor fountains because of their flowing water rather than the standing water found in bowl-shaped bird baths. Trickling fountains that splash around are audible from far away, attracting even more birds.

Dogs are drawn to fountains mainly because they provide drinking water. During scorching months of summer, cats and dogs will be outside searching for the absolute freshest water around. Also, routinely flowing water fountains require less maintenance than the still water of a birdbath that tend to get dirtier.

Garden Fountains: The Perfect Way to Honor Someone Special

Garden fountains make ideal and distinctive commemorative pieces. Many old observances have been eliminated in today’s world. Yet most cultures even now build memorials to honor their dead. Memorials often include personal objects and are often used to pay homage to the deceased. Many people view backyard garden fountains as wonderful commemorative pieces to their loved ones.

Including pictures, planting a tree or flowers, attaching a customized plaque, or gathering at the fountain to pay homage are ways you can make it more personal.

People you have lost can be remembered in a nice loving manner with garden fountains. The tricking of water through the fountain symbolizes the luck and affluence of your loved one and can also be part of the honoring of their life. It is highly advisable to choose a high quality, sturdy garden fountain that is impervious to bad weather so that it will last a very long time. When you get your garden fountain up and working, you will want to make sure it is going to last for many years.
